The Best Advice I Never Took
Years ago, someone gave me a piece of advice.
They said:
"Slow down. Enjoy it while it's happening."
Naturally, I ignored them completely.
I was busy chasing the next thing.
The next song.
The next opportunity.
The next adventure.
Like most people in their twenties, I thought life was something that happened somewhere up ahead.
Not right now.
Looking back, I wish I'd paid a little more attention.
Not because I regret anything.
Quite the opposite.
I just realize now how many great moments I rushed through because I was already focused on what came next.
The funny thing is, years later, those moments became songs.
That's certainly true of "Smooth Sailing (When I Was 23)."
A song about a time I probably appreciated far more in hindsight than I did while I was living it.
Still... maybe that's how memories work.
